The End.

Nightmares!!!... Because this is going "on tour" with the Sketchbook Project I actuall covered the whole thing in cellophane tape so it would withstand many handlings.  Part of me is happy to be completed. Part of me is heartbroken to send off something that I've truly put so much of my heart and soul and time into.

Frozen stiff... This one started with this gnome-lookin' fellow with the ice formation in front of him.  I pictured him as this evil character who had Medusa-like powers.

The bones! The bones!... This one I think has to be my favorite. Even the hand cramp I got from drawing so many stinkin' skulls was worth it.  I think if I ever do a illustrate a book - this is the feel I would like it to have.  Just love it.

Over and over... I admittedly struggled with this one.  I wasn't quite sure where to go with this old-time musician.  I tried to picture what his "hell" would be and came up with this idea of being forced to play the same song repeatedly until the end of time.

Only an afterthought... I started this one with cutting up an image of a painting by one of my favorite artists, El Greco (perhaps he's a favorite because his style is much like a fashion ilustrator's with elongated figures), but placed two of the characters differently than they were in the painting. I liked how they were looking up at something - but what?  I've been in this mode of thinking about designing a costume for a Victorian-era burlesque dancer/circus performer. And so came out these hanging ballerina/suicide girls who's costume definitely has a burlesque/circus flair.

I know not where to go... I really am happy with how this page turned out. I especially like the boarded up windows. I wanted to give a sense of both being trapped and feeling alone and hopeless.  I compartmentalized sections of this to give that impression.

We were all trapped in bubbles...I thought this one needed to be light and airy like the bubbles floating so I kept the background and any shadows to a minimum.

And from his hat...And here is the aforementioned castle.  I liked this odd little Dickensian figure with his magic hat too.  I nearly cross-hatched my hand off working on this page.

The Plague Doctor...I have a fascination with the Plague and the Plague Doctor mask.  Well, masks in general if you ask my friend, Dave.  They seem to show up everywhere in my art whether intentional or not.

The little frog turned out a bit too happy for such a morbid page... but alas, maybe subconsciously I had to get a little bit of humour in the book!  I think my next project will have to be happy images of puppy dogs and lollipops to balance out this one! Ha!

Rasputin was controlling my mind...Who isn't fascinated by Rasputin?  I just liked this image of him surrounded by women.  I cut out most of the women leaving the two with the the most uncomfortable stares.

I am ashes...I think the crux of most people's nightmares revolves around the fear of death. I decided to combine that with my interest in the Salem Witch Trials, etc.

I was a stranger in a strange land...This one started out with these two men... then I heard in my head the U2 song Stranger in a Strange Land. I decided to create these "rays" that eminate out of the men revealing slivers of this unknown world.

Snakes and cockroaches and masks... oh my!

When the demons arise...This one started out with this image of people running.  I imagined a world spilling over with blood. The demons to the left are taunting the tiny running humans.

1984, Part 1, Chapter 8One of my favorite books of all time was Orwell's 1984.  Even scarier is how much has come true.

One of my recurring dreams is when I know that I'm dreaming but I can't wake up... I feel frozen. I try to move my hands, feet, sit up, scream... but I can't do any of these.  This bit from the novel reminded me of those dreams.

Hold these mysteries close to you...I have always...since I was a young girl...been mildly obsessed with minotaurs and labrynths.  I blame it on playing Dungeons & Dragons on our family's Intellivision. Was very impressionable then. I grew up and actually have a problem where I get dizzy on occasion which was diagnosed as labrynthitis.  But of course! Next I will probably develop castleitis.

This page was about what we are all searching for in both our daily lives and dreams. But there is always a large obstacle in the way...sometimes it may be ourselves. But this is for only us to know and to discover.

If I am not in control of my thoughts...I started with this circular image that I colored in to resemble an archer's target.  There is also the man who is only insides (truly exposed and vulnerable to all things around him) and the small doorway to the right of him.

I filled in the scenery and thought about this idea of not being able to control our dreams. Granted, we have the occasional lucid dream, but for the most part we are unaware of where they come from and why we have them.

From the depths below...I loved this image of the ship - which I immediately thought of as a ghost ship.  My friend, Miriam, who is into zombies (even before the recent undead trend) requested an underwater zombie.  So when I started drawing the treasure box, I decided to include a lightning-wielding zombie arm.

The daily battle...This one is about our daily stuggles v. our nightly struggles. Both can be nightmares.

The relentless rain...
Here is the first page of my sketchbook... I have decided to do all pen & ink work, using only one extra color (red).

I've decided to cut pictures from these old Horizon magazines from the 60s that I got at a resale shop many moons ago. Those images will be used as my jumping off point for the ideas on each page.

No ordinary faces...I started with these images of totem pole gods and decided to keep that 'boxed' feel of those images and do closeups on parts of faces of nightmarish characters.
